The rising sea levels are slowly raising the low lying islands like pacific islands. The new research has shed light on the rising sea levels on slow inundating island. Around 27 low lying islands which are in the Pacific Ocean was taken for the study by the scientists. The modern satellite images and aerial photos of 60 were taken and being compared by the scientists for the research.
The article appeared in the New Scientist journal which the article had been discussed in detail. The research has been conducted by the University of Auckland and lead professor of the study is Paul Kench. Only four islands had declined from 27 islands despite rise in the average sea level of 60 year period. The decline of sea level by 12 cm is seen from the past 60 years say scientist in the report. Around half of the island has remained the same size for the past 60 years and half islands have increased their size. There is no particular island which can be claimed to have remained as it is from the past years.
The climate change and rising sea levels affect the island in different ways. The waves sometimes are making the island grow,even the currents and winds are bring out the coral debris. The study mainly was involved in the study of land area, cyclones and storms even play important role in rising island levels. Some of the island has seen the rise of 30% due to climatic change since 1950’s and the reason may be climatic changes.
