Like-for-like sales – which exclude the impact of new store openings – in the six weeks to 7 January were up 6.7% compared with last year.
In that period it also sold over a thousand tonnes of wild bird food.
The company’s like-for-like sales for the year ending 7 January were up 9.8%.
In a statement, Pets at Home chief executive Matt Davies said 2009 had been a good year for the retailer.
“Our performance has been very strong all year and I am pleased that despite the bad weather we were also able to deliver a good sales performance over the Christmas period,” he said.

Camera maker Kodak has said it will sue Apple and Research In Motion (RIM), the makers of the iPhone and Blackberry, over technology used in their handsets.
Kodak has filed a complaint with the US International Trade Commission (ITC).
It alleges the iPhone and Blackberry use technology for previewing pictures that infringe Kodak patents.
It has also filed two separate suits against Apple that claim infringements of patents relating to digital cameras and certain computer processes.
Kodak has asked the ITC to bar both firms from shipping the phones and has asked for undisclosed monetary damages.
RIM and Apple declined to comment.

A major Cadbury shareholder has indicated that US food giant Kraft will have to increase its hostile takeover offer if it wishes to win support.
Legal & General Investment Management, which owns 5% of Cadbury shares, said Kraft’s current offer did not meet “the long term value” of the UK firm.
The comments come ahead of Tuesday’s deadline for Kraft to increase its offer to Cadbury shareholders.
Meanwhile, a report said Hershey was planning a rival bid for Cadbury.
The Wall Street Journal said chocolate group Hershey, also a US company, may bid next week.
Kraft’s current bid is worth less than Cadbury’s share price.
Kraft is currently offering £10.5bn or 761p per Cadbury share, which has been rejected by the chocolate-maker’s shareholders.
